"Poetic Invective: From Benghazi to Hastert"
It’s hard to know whether to weep or to laugh
When we read in the news that the Benghazi staff
Spent working hours, the public be damned,
Ordering Tiffany Glocks, monogrammed.
At least their superiors had the good grace
To confess to the truth with the phrase “glacial pace”
Inscribed on the glasses they drank their wine from:
That’s what Republican rule has become.
And speaking of rules that ought to be stopped,
The one named for Hastert: high time it was dropped.
For nothing important will ever get done
If a majority’s majority must first be won.
A new rule may soon grow attached to his name:
Plead guilty, and thereby avoid public shame.
Let this new rule the old one replace
As the one we call “Hastert”: a fitting disgrace.
